Speed tweaks for Firefox

My Firefox been lagging heavily and freezes for weeks now. After Google-ed with the right keyword and finally I found this. I post it here in case some of you can’t find it. Thanks to the expert who come up with this useful tip. Easy to do. Just follow this simple steps.

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit enter. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

2. Alter the entries as follows:

Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true” (double click to change the false/true value)

Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true

Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.

Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0“. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

It really works. No more lagging and no more crashing.

Now I can “Browse The Web Faster”.

Above method seems to work for me for awhile. I can’t figured out why Firefox using an abnormally large amount of memory from 400Mb up to 1.2Gb. With that kind of memory usage, no wonder Firefox always hang.

So I did a little experiment. I have 2 hard drives with 7 partitions. What I did was to move the pagefile.sys to another partition. Set it to system managed size. and restart my computer. Launch Firefox and open about 30 tabs from my previous browsing history and bookmarks. Checked Windows Task Manager and Firefox memory usage has been reduced within the range of 120Mb ~ 200Mb.

My little experiment worked. 🙂 I don’t know about other Firefox users and if you experienced the same huge memory usage, you can give my little experiment a try. I don’t guarantee it will work for you coz not all PC having the same configurations and settings. Also not to installed Firefox in default C:\Program Files\, put it in another drive partition. Non-Windows applications will slows down startup and cramping the disk space used by Windows files system.

Steps

  1. Start –>Control Panel
  2. Control Panel –>System
  3. System (Systemí‚  Properties) –>Advanced
  4. In Advanced –>choose Performance (visual effect, processor scheduling, etc)–>Settings
  5. Settings (Performance Options) –>Advanced
  6. Advanced (Virtual Memory) –>Change
  7. Virtual Memory Options –>click and highlight drive (default is C:, choose other drive)
  8. Clickí‚  System Managed Size –>Set (or use custom size to desired size)
  9. Ok –>(windows will prompt to restart)
  10. After restart –> go to C: and delete pagefile.sys (file not used anymore because system created new pagefile.sys to another drive chosen by user)
